New rejection for Kickl – video message: Nehammer wants to keep his word

Date:

Ahead of the upcoming talks with the FPÖ and SPÖ, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) reiterated his announcements on government cooperation. “What I promised before the elections, I will fulfill after the elections,” he said in a two-minute video message on Thursday evening.

As a reminder, before the elections, Nehammer ruled out the formation of a coalition with the FPÖ led by Herbert Kickl. The Chancellor appears to have repeated this.

Nehammer spoke of an election result with two faces. Although the ÖVP did not come first, many chose “trust instead of fear”. Now it is important to address the concerns of the Austrians. We stand with “those who chose trust over fear.”

“And I will not forget that in future conversations,” said Nehammer, who clearly sees the path that Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has set out.

Nehammer takes over Van der Bellen’s words
Because a “stalemate” between the FPÖ, ÖVP and SPÖ prevented the usual process of coalition formation after the National Council elections, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen initially did not task any party to form a government.

Nehammer’s full statement in the video:

Instead, the three parties with the most votes should “reliably make clear what cooperation is conceivable” by the end of next week. Election winner FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl wants to coordinate talks with SPÖ and ÖVP, but the timetable is still open.

Elections are expected in Vorarlberg
The invitations to the ÖVP and SPÖ have not yet been sent, the FPÖ said on Thursday. Nothing will happen before the middle of next week, the discussions must then be actively communicated. This means that we apparently have to wait for the results of Sunday’s state elections in Vorarlberg. The ÖVP had no concrete plans yet. It was said that they wanted to fulfill Van der Bellen’s wishes.

The SPÖ said it would wait and see, given the election results it was the FPÖ’s turn. A coalition with the PVV is still ruled out. People will still talk to each other, as has been the norm in everyday parliamentary life. Even with the second-placed ÖVP, no date has been set yet.
