A heavily armed man was arrested on Saturday on the sidelines of a campaign appearance by Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump in California.
The 49-year-old was stopped at a checkpoint near the Coachella venue. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, the man was carrying a rifle, a loaded handgun and a high-capacity magazine. The suspect was arrested on charges of illegal gun possession and later released on bail.
“This incident had no impact on the safety of former President Trump or those who attended the event,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
On July 13, Trump was assassinated during a campaign appearance in the small town of Butler, Pennsylvania. The gunman, who was later shot by Secret Service, narrowly missed the 78-year-old Republican. Trump injured his ear.
Another incident occurred in mid-September when a man with a gun hid in the bushes at the edge of Trump’s golf course. The 58-year-old was arrested and charged with attempted murder of a presidential candidate.
