Two weeks ago, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards fired about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel. Since then, Israel has been planning retaliatory attacks. Now American media are reporting that nuclear installations and the oil industry should not be targeted.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reported this to the US government, the Washington Post newspaper reported on Monday, citing two officials familiar with the matter. Netanyahu told US President Joe Biden this in a phone call on October 9, the report said.
Biden had made it clear that he would not support an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. Analysts say an attack on oil facilities could push up energy prices, while an attack on nuclear facilities could trigger further escalation and drag the US into the conflict. Netanyahu’s plan to attack only military facilities was met with relief in Washington.
Retaliation before the US elections
But the voices in Israeli politics who want to destroy the mullahs’ nuclear program will not be silenced. Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on the short messaging platform X in early October: “If we don’t do it now, I don’t see it ever happening.”
The Israeli retaliatory strikes will certainly be carried out before the US presidential elections on November 5, according to the Washington Post.
Netanyahu: “We will make our final decisions”
Netanyahu’s office said of the report: “We listen to the positions of the United States, but we make our final decisions based on our national security interests.”
