Following the silence of former Finance Minister Thomas Schmid, the ÖVP’s corruption inquiry commission is less prominent on Wednesday, but possibly more revealing. The ex-Secretary General of the Federal Chancellery (BKA) and the Ministry of Defence, Dieter Kandlhofer, as well as the ex-Prime Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and the current BKA Chief of Staff Andreas Achatz have been invited.
Achatz, who stands at the start of the investigation’s day, was chief of staff under both former interior ministers Wolfgang Sobotka and Karl Nehammer and current department head Gerhard Karner (all ÖVP). Since mid-October, he has been head of cabinet again, but this time in the Federal Chancellery.
Kandlhofer used to work in the Federal Chancellery – under ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) he held the position of Secretary General, later he was also at the Ministry of Defence.
