American presidential candidate Kamala Harris gave her first interview on the conservative channel Fox News. As expected, she was often pressured in conversations with moderator Bret Baier. She distinguished herself from her predecessor Joe Biden: she does not seek a continuation of his presidency.
Baier is widely considered one of the last serious journalists at Fox News. Nevertheless, a heated exchange of blows took place – the conversation, which lasted about 30 minutes, had the character of a duel and became loud again and again. The moderator kept interrupting her. “Can I finish my answer?” Harris had to respond repeatedly.
Baier started the conversation with the issue of migration, which was central to the election campaign. As vice president of the US, Harris is responsible for, among other things, the immigration problem. Her Republican rival Donald Trump repeatedly attacks the 59-year-old on the issue and accuses her of failure. Harris accused Trump of “political games” on migration
It is right that the American people want to have a discussion about migration before the elections. But what people didn’t want was “political games,” Harris said, referring to Trump. The Democrat struggled and tried to counter it.
For example, Baier asked Harris if she owed an apology to the families of women killed by migrants. “Let me first say that these are tragic cases. There is no doubt about that,” US Vice President Harris replied. The American migration system has been broken for a long time. Congress is responsible for solving it, Harris said, accusing Republicans and Trump of blocking solutions.
Opponent creates ‘feeling of fear’
Baier then turned the conversation to the topic of gender reassignment surgery and the rights of transsexuals, which conservatives have repeatedly politicized. The moderator asked the American vice president whether taxpayer money should be used for this. Harris responded that Trump spent millions of dollars on ads “to create a sense of fear among voters because he doesn’t really have a plan in this election that focuses on the needs of the American people.”
No worries about Biden’s health
As acting deputy, Harris has been repeatedly blamed for government mistakes during the election campaign, including several times in the Fox News interview. “When did you first notice that President (Joe) Biden’s mental faculties appeared to be impaired?” Baier asked. Harris paused and then responded: She had met Biden at least once a week for three and a half years and she wasn’t worried.
Trump is “unfit and dangerous”
The Democrat tried to focus the conversation on her opponent Trump: the American people are worried about the ex-president, according to Harris. The people who would know him best — even his former White House aides — deemed the Republican “unfit and dangerous” and said he should “never be president of the United States again.”
Harris promises “fresh, new ideas”
When asked what sets her apart from Biden, Harris deliberately distanced herself: “Let me be clear that my presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s presidency.” Like any new person in the office, she will take her life experience and bring it professional experience and “fresh, new ideas”. She also represents a new generation.
Trump attacked the moderator before the interview
Trump’s campaign called the interview a fiasco and described Harris as “angry and defensive.” Baier is the top political anchor at Fox News. His focus is on political analysis, interviews and news. Trump had already attacked the moderator before the interview aired. He accused Baier on his online platform Truth Social of not attacking the left hard enough. “I would have preferred a journalist who asked more persistent questions, but Fox has become so weak and soft on Democrats.” After the interview, a Fox News commentator told Baier that he had “won” the interview.
Fox News is considered quite conservative. The broadcaster paid $787 million to a voting machine manufacturer last year as part of a settlement. He sued after some Fox hosts falsely stated that the machines had been rigged during the 2020 election.
