The two comedians Christoph Grissemann and Dirk Stermann made jokes in the satirical program “Welcome Austria” about the statement of deputy mayor of Bregenz, Sandra Schoch. The Green politician now responded with an open letter.
As is well known, humor can be debated. Bregenz Green Party politician Sandra Schoch did not find what she recently heard and saw in the satirical ORF show ‘Welcome Austria’ laughable.
Pronunciation due to a neurological voice disorder
The two comedians Dirk Stermann and Christoph Grissemann made fun of Schoch’s statement in their well-known biting manner in the October 15 issue. In a contribution to the state elections, Stermann consistently spoke of “Vorahberg”. This corruption was explained by an interview sequence with the deputy mayor of Bregenz, in which she also says “Vorahberg” instead of “Vorarlberg” several times. Stermann and Grissemann subsequently interpreted this statement as, among other things, “tearfulness”.
Schoch defends himself
However, Sandra Schoch is not happy with this interpretation. In an open letter via the ‘X’ platform (formerly Twitter), she addressed the cabaret duo directly: ‘My alleged pronunciation problems have nothing to do with the Bregenz dialect. In fact, they result from a neurological voice disorder known as spasmodic dysphonia of the adductor type. This disease causes involuntary spasms of the laryngeal muscles and severely impairs speech. What seems like a ‘whiny’ speech to you is actually an open struggle in front of the camera to speak understandably,” Schoch explains.
For people with spasmodic dysphonia, speaking is a constant effort, especially with certain vowel combinations and multisyllabic words – “including the word ‘Vorarlberg’,” the politician explains.
It will be interesting to see how and if the two will react to this – they usually like to take direct passes.
