If Kamala Harris wins the US elections, she could save her rival Donald Trump a lot of time in court – or even in prison. But does she actually want that? In an interview she left the question of a possible pardon unanswered.
Donald Trump is the first American president in history to face criminal charges. In total, he is accused in four trials. In the event that he crosses the finish line first in the November 5 election, it is not yet legally clear whether he could pardon himself – this would likely have to be decided by the US Supreme Court at a later date.
Harris does not want to step into such a “scenario”.
The situation would be different if the Democrat emerged victorious. However, Kamala Harris did not want to discuss “hypothetical scenarios”, as she explained to the American broadcaster NBC. Instead, she is focusing on the next fortnight until the election date.
The consequences for Trump in court could be unpleasant. For example, he was already convicted in New York for illegally recording hush money payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels – but the exact sentence is still pending. Trump has so far managed to successfully postpone further proceedings until after the election.
There is a precedent for pardons: in 1974, Republican Gerald Ford pardoned his predecessor Richard Nixon, the first American president to resign as a result of the Watergate affair.
Judge ruled in Trump’s favor: will she become a minister?
Meanwhile, TV channel ABC reported that judge Aileen Cannon, who dropped the criminal case against Trump in the document affair in July, is considered in his circle as a candidate for the post of attorney general. Her name can be found on a list in Trump’s campaign team, mentioning famous people.
