After the attack on Iran: – Fear of escalation: EU calls for restraint

Date:

Following the Israeli air strikes on Iran in response to Iranian rocket fire, the European Union has now called on all parties to exercise restraint. UN Secretary General António Guterres expressed his “deep concern” about the situation in the Middle East.

While the EU recognizes Israel’s right to self-defense, it calls on all parties to exercise “the utmost restraint” to avoid an “uncontrollable escalation” in the Middle East, the 27 EU member states said in a statement on Saturday . Such an escalation is ‘in no one’s interest’.

The danger that the conflict will spread
The “dangerous cycle of attacks and retaliation” threatens to further escalate the regional conflict, the statement said. The EU remains “committed” to reducing rising tensions in the region and contributing to de-escalation. To this end, it “remains in close contact with all relevant actors”.

UN Secretary General António Guterres also expressed “deep concern” about the situation. Through his spokesman, he said he “urgently reiterated his call on all parties to halt all military actions, including in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.” Guterres calls for “maximum efforts to prevent a large-scale regional war and return to the path of diplomacy.”

The Israeli Air Force attacked military targets
Nearly four weeks after the Iranian missile attacks on Israel, the Israeli air force said on Saturday evening it had attacked several military targets in Iran. According to information from Tehran, two Iranian soldiers have been killed. Furthermore, there was only “limited damage”, according to the country’s air defense.

Numerous explosions were heard around the Iranian capital Tehran. According to Iran, these were due to air defenses – and not directly to Israeli missiles. Oil refineries and nuclear facilities were reportedly not attacked.

Hezbollah fires 80 rockets into Israel
In response to Israeli airstrikes on Iran, the pro-Iranian Hezbollah in Lebanon has fired massive rocket fire into Israel. By early Saturday afternoon, about 80 shells fired by Hezbollah had reached Israel from Lebanon, the Israeli military said.

This in turn attacked Hezbollah positions in Lebanon again on Saturday. The military had previously reported the controlled demolition of an underground ammunition depot (see images in the tweet above) belonging to the Hezbollah militia by Israeli forces in Lebanon, prompting earthquake warnings in Israel.
