At least 55 people were killed in an Israeli attack on a residential building in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. As the Palestinian news agency WAFA and the terrorist militia Hamas reported, many women and children were among the dead.
The Gaza Strip Civil Emergency Service also reported that 55 Palestinians were killed in Beit Lahiya. Dozens of people were also injured, the report said. Among the dead were a mother with her five children and another mother with six children, according to an initial casualty list from the rescue service.
Victims still under the rubble, hospital overwhelmed
It is believed that many victims are still under the rubble of the building. The director of the nearby Kamal Adwan Hospital said they were overwhelmed by the number of injured people needing treatment. “The world must act and not just watch the genocide in Gaza,” Dr Hossam Abu Safiya told Al Jazeera. The Israeli military did not immediately comment.
UN chief: “There is no alternative to UNRWA”
Meanwhile, there is disgust over Israel’s decision to ban the Palestinian UN aid organization. “There is no alternative to UNRWA,” said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. He warned of “devastating consequences for Palestinian refugees” in the occupied territory.
Shortly before the Knesset’s decision, seven Western countries expressed “deep concern” about the legislative plans. In a statement, the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Britain, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea “strongly” called on the Israeli government to meet its international obligations.
UNRWA must completely halt its activities in the Gaza Strip
According to the recently passed controversial law, the Palestinian aid organization UNRWA must stop its work in Israel next year – the organization will be completely banned from activities on Israeli territory. 92 out of 120 MPs voted in favor of the project. Proponents of the ban justified the law by claiming that some UNRWA staff were involved in the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
