Two Russian soldiers have been sentenced to life imprisonment for exterminating an entire Ukrainian family. In total, the two have nine lives on their conscience; the victims included children.
About a year after the murder of nine Ukrainian civilians, the soldiers stood trial in southern Russia. According to investigators, the two suspects broke into a house in the city of Volnovacha in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, which was occupied by Russian forces. There they shot the family with their silenced weapons.
The defendants deny the crime and have appealed the verdict, Russia’s state news agency Tass reported.
The suspects are said to have killed out of hatred
Initially the motive was to obtain vodka, which was prohibited during the war. The verdict now states that the perpetrators committed the murder out of “political, ideological, racist, national or religious hatred.” The trial itself took place behind closed doors.
Public reports of verdicts are rare
Kiev has repeatedly accused Russian forces of serious crimes in the war zone. Moscow generally denies such crimes. The Russian parliament has even passed a law criminalizing alleged defamation of the Russian military. Public reports of such statements – especially with such justifications confirming the Ukrainian accusations – are considered relatively rare.
