The Basque Parliament commemorates Memorial Day with the participation of all groups except PP and Vox

Date:

Representatives of all factions, except PP and Vox, observed a minute’s silence and took part in a floral offering in memory of the victims.

The Lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, this Sunday demanded a “non-revanchist, critical and self-critical memory” that overcomes the “self-justifying and complacent” narratives, that does not contain “discrimination or forgetfulness”, and that aims to ensure that “hell” does not repeat itself.

In his speech, the Lehendakari recalled the suffering of Basque citizens and explained that all residents of Euskadi know in one way or another someone who has suffered “intimidation, extortion, torture, threats and violence”.

Pradales has recognized the “spontaneous and sincere reaction” of the vast majority of Basque society against violence and defended that today’s event should serve to “remember, transmit and socialize” so that “that hell” does not repeat itself .

The Basque Parliament commemorated Remembrance Day with an event attended by the President, Bakartxo weavingthe lehendakari, Imanol Pradalesand their advisors, and parliamentarians from all groups except PP and Vox, who observed a minute’s silence and took part in a floral offering in memory of the victims.

The event, as in previous years, took place in front of the sculpture “Gauerdiko Iparrorratza”, in honor of the victims, located at the entrance to the Autonomous Chamber.

All parties are represented, except PP and Vox who are against other victims of political violence and abuse by state apparatuses being commemorated. The PP attended yesterday’s event organized by the Victims Remembrance Center and the Gasteiz City Council, and Vox is celebrating its own commemoration today in Bilbo.

Relatives of ETA prisoners have gathered nearby Parliament to demand that the 16 people who died in road accidents while traveling to visit their loved ones in prisons outside the Basque Country be recognized as victims.

This day was chosen by the Basque government to commemorate Remembrance Day, as it is the only day on the calendar without fatal ETA deaths.
