US President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin on the phone on Thursday, according to a media report. He advised the Russian president not to escalate the war of aggression against Ukraine.
The Washington Post wrote this on Sunday, citing informed people. There was initially no information about this from Trump himself.
Trump refers to the American military presence in Europe
Trump also referred to the US military presence in Europe. It was also about the goal of achieving peace in Europe. Trump encouraged further talks to discuss a solution to the war.
Ukraine denies media reports
The Ukrainian government was aware of the conversation and had no objections, writes the Washington Post. This information was immediately rejected as “false” by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A ministry spokesperson emphasized that Ukraine had not been informed in advance and therefore could not express any objections or support for the call.
War in Ukraine: Trump promised an early end during the election campaign
Republican Trump announced during the election campaign that he would quickly end the war in Ukraine. He has not yet said how he plans to achieve this. (Still) US President Joe Biden and Ukraine fear that under Trump, US military aid to Ukraine could dry up, preventing the Russian invasion.
Biden wants to disburse aid before Trump takes office
Therefore, Biden announced that he would give Ukraine the remaining US$6 billion ($5.6 billion) earmarked for his aid. Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that Biden would also remind Trump of the global risks of ending U.S. support for Ukraine.
The US is currently Ukraine’s main supporter. Recently, however, the country has come under increasing pressure due to further losses of territory to Russia and a shortage of weapons and soldiers.
Radio silence between Biden and Putin
Since the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022, there has been radio silence between Biden and Putin. According to an unconfirmed report in the Wall Street Journal, Trump has spoken with Putin several times in recent years as an ex-president. On January 20, Trump will be sworn in for a second term as president.
During his first term, Trump met the Russian president once for a bilateral conversation, in Helsinki in 2018. The summit turned out to be a fiasco for the then US president, as he stabbed his own secret services in the back at the press conference and denied Putin’s assurances supported that Russia had not interfered in the 2016 US elections.
