NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger will meet on Tuesday for exploratory talks with Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) and Andreas Babler (SPÖ). She said she would examine “the will for reform” of the other parties. Ultimately, voters voted for ‘no business as usual’.
They themselves would have a mandate for reforms, for example in the areas of childcare, education and the economy (less bureaucracy, more childcare places, etc.). The party could pursue this in opposition, but the government could ignore it.
In principle, the NEOS would also be available as a government partner, as Meinl-Reisinger emphasized again. It is important to create added value as a third partner. Her party is not available for “black-red plus one”. “We are clear that the three of us are coming together because we want to, and not because we have to.”
Eye level, respect and transparency
That it takes the same amount of time to figure out how to collaborate is understandable to the NEOS boss, who says she has already received similar questions about it. Old patterns should no longer pose a threat.
According to her, transparency, respect and equality are important in a government. Not only in cooperation with each other, but also with citizens. According to their own statement, the NEOS do not yet know when the decision will be made on whether they or the Greens can join the next government. As reported, the exploratory talks have been postponed from Monday afternoon to Tuesday due to the death of Nehammer’s father-in-law.
