The “sweet tooth” should soon be dry: as ÖVP boss and Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced on Tuesday, a “third partner” for the future federal government is expected on Wednesday.
It is not yet known what color the “candy” will be. There seems to be so much agreement with the SPÖ, now the question arises about the junior partner. The NEOS had already expressed their wishes for the Ministry of Finance in the media last week, but this could still develop into a possible point of contention.
Nevertheless, it seems quite realistic that the Pinks are more likely to have a foot in the government door than the Greens. NEOS chairman Beate Meinl-Reisinger had already met with Nehammer and SPÖ chairman Andreas Babler on Monday and was generally optimistic afterwards.
Nevertheless, one hears from the red ranks that the SPÖ wants to keep an option open with the Greens – especially because Babler’s wing of the Social Democrats is ideologically closer to Werner Kogler’s party members than to the NEOS.
The search for a third potential coalition partner is due to Turquoise-Red’s extremely narrow majority with only one mandate overhang in the National Council. To get a clearer voice, you need a third party in the government boat.
