SPÖ leader Andreas Babler has responded for the first time to Georg Dornauer’s controversial hunting trip. His Tyrolean party member knows what he has to do. However, he does not want to anticipate “intensive discussions” within the Tyrolean regional association.
Babler continued in a joint statement with Chancellor Karl Nehammer on the status of the exploratory talks against Dornauer: if the Tyrolean SPÖ leader broke the law, there would be “no more questions.”
He could “more than understand” his fellow party member’s criticism. If Dornauer asks the question of confidence, it will become clear whether he still has support in Tyrol. Babler expects a “very clear decision” soon.
As a reminder, the “Krone” published a hunting photo of the Deputy Governor of Tyrol. Despite the weapons ban, he poses with a killed deer and the bankrupt billionaire René Benko. Dornauer himself spoke of “terrible optics” and “unfortunate episode”. Now the 41-year-old is fighting for his political survival.
“I am convinced that if he looks at himself, he will know what to do,” Carinthia Governor Peter Kaiser said in the Kleine Zeitung on Tuesday. The chairman of the Styrian SPÖ state party took a clearer tone towards ORF Steiermark. He had ‘no understanding’ for Dornauer’s behavior and ‘a certain line had been crossed’. “I assume that the consequences here can only be that the Tyrolean SPÖ takes appropriate measures.”
Dornauer is likely to falter a lot and could try to buy time with the confidence vote in the state party council next week. An official positioning of the Tyrolean Reds is still pending.
