Now it’s official: the Republicans also defended the House of Representatives in the American elections. This means that Donald Trump controls both chambers of Congress – at least in theory.
As the American broadcasters CNN and NBC News reported on Wednesday, the Republicans won at least 218 seats in the Congress chamber and thus the majority. They had previously regained the majority in the Senate, so that Trump can count on a Republican majority in both chambers of Congress at the start of his term.
According to calculations by Edison Research, Republicans will also have a majority in the House of Representatives. The data supplier agreed on Wednesday with Monday’s prediction from election website Decision Desk HQ. This means that Republicans control the presidential office and the entire Congress, at least until the midterm elections in two years.
This is good news for Donald Trump and his radical plans. The Republicans can now govern more or less undisturbed. The confirmation of government officials and judges is also likely to happen more quickly, making it much easier to implement his political agenda. This means that an important barrier against authoritarian tendencies feared in another Trump era is missing.
Trump is not sure of majorities
However, there are also factions within the Republican Party that are deeply divided. Even the hero of the MAGA movement will have to secure a majority. On Wednesday in the US Senate, Trump got a taste of the efforts this could require in the future. Despite his demands, Republicans elected their old party colleague John Thune as the new majority leader of the Chamber of Congress.
The 63-year-old senator from South Dakota defeated two colleagues in Wednesday’s vote. Among them was Rick Scott of Florida, a close Trump ally.
Scott was vociferously supported by his supporters, including billionaire and Tesla boss Elon Musk. The vote was seen as a sign that the Senate could retain some degree of independence from Trump in next year’s new legislature. There is no factionalism in the US.
