President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s left-wing coalition has won a majority in the country’s parliament in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections, according to partial results. The population now hopes for better economic conditions.
The National People’s Power (NPP) won about 62 percent after more than two-thirds of votes were counted, election commission data showed on Friday. This means the alliance has at least 123 seats in the 225-seat parliament, giving Dissanayake a free hand for his reform program.
In the previous parliament, the NPP had only three seats. The party of the new head of state Dissanayake is the Marxist People’s Liberation Front (JVP), the most important part of the NPP alliance. Dissanayake dissolved the MPs after taking office in September and called early elections.
End corruption and reduce taxes
Dissanayake won the presidential election on promises to end corruption and cut income taxes, among other things. Sri Lanka is suffering from severe austerity measures imposed by the International Monetary Fund in exchange for financial aid. Dissanayake is now aiming for a two-thirds majority in parliament to stabilize his government, promote planned reforms and further implement austerity measures.
