Armistice in Lebanon? – Israel wants to give Trump a “gift” in January

Date:

According to media reports, the US has submitted a ceasefire proposal between the Israeli forces and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia. According to reports, the Israeli government is also working on such a plan, which will be presented at Donald Trump’s inauguration.

A diplomatic breakthrough could serve as a quick foreign policy success for the newly elected US president, three current and former Israeli officials told The Washington Post. “There is an agreement that Israel will give Trump a gift, that there will be an agreement on Lebanon in January,” an Israeli official said. Accordingly, the Israeli government’s priorities changed quickly after the US elections.

Information went to Trump rather than Biden
According to the US newspaper, Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer visited future President Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate during his most recent US trip before meeting with the incumbent administration of Democratic President Joe Biden in Washington, briefed on the current status of ceasefire talks in Lebanon.

The Israeli proposal therefore calls on Hezbollah to withdraw behind the Litani River – about 30 kilometers from the border with Israel. In addition, Russia, which has relations with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and has stationed troops in the country, must ensure that Hezbollah does not rearm itself from Syria. According to the Washington Post, Russian negotiators were recently in Israel to discuss the details.

The US rejects accusations of genocide against Israel
The US has spoken out against a UN commission’s assessment that Israeli war methods in the Gaza Strip meet the characteristics of ‘genocide’. “We clearly disagree with the UN report that Israel is using famine as a method of war,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said Thursday. “We think that this kind of wording and this kind of accusation is certainly unfounded.”

Patel also took issue with a report by the NGO Human Rights Watch, which said, among other things, that Israeli policymakers were committing the “war crime of forced relocation.” The forced displacement of Palestinians would be a “red line” for the US, Patel said. However, it is “perfectly fine and acceptable to ask civilians to evacuate a certain area while certain military operations are being conducted” and then allow them to go home, Patel said. “We haven’t seen any kind of specific forced shift.”

No restrictions on US military aid
On Tuesday, after a deadline passed, the administration in Washington said Israel was doing enough to address the humanitarian crisis. This means that the threatened reduction in US military aid will not happen.

“Nevertheless, Israel must ensure that its measures are fully implemented and that improvements are sustained over time,” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the Security Council. Moreover, it is urgent that Israel suspend the implementation of a law banning the activities of the UN aid agency UNRWA.
