Will Elon Musk, in addition to his role as ‘austerity master’ who must reduce government spending, also be the Middle East representative of the new Trump administration? According to a newspaper report, the high-tech billionaire met with Iran’s UN ambassador for talks on a possible easing of ties with the US.
According to the New York Times, the meeting took place on Thursday at an undisclosed location. Several Iranian sources described the meeting, which lasted more than an hour, as “positive” and spoke of “good news.” Neither Trump’s transition team nor the Iranian mission to the UN in New York confirmed the information.
The news became public after Trump nominated Republican Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State the day before. Rubio is seen as in favor of a tough approach towards Iran.
Musk’s “agency” is not part of the government
After Trump comes to power on January 20, 53-year-old Musk will lead a new department for efficient governance together with businessman Vivek Ramaswamy. This department, which is not part of the government, is expected to present plans for job cuts and restructuring of the civil service to drastically reduce costs.
