Russia stops gas supplies to Austria. The cooperation ends on Saturday morning. But Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) makes everything clear (he is currently making a press statement, see livestream above): “I can promise you: no one will freeze in winter, no apartment will remain cold!”
According to his own statement, he was told on Friday afternoon that Gazprom would stop deliveries to OMV on Saturday morning. “This means that what we have been preparing for since the outbreak of war in Ukraine has happened,” the Chancellor emphasized in a press statement.
OMV received millions in compensation
Background to the supply stop: OMV was awarded damages of more than 200 million euros before an arbitration tribunal on Thursday for irregular gas supplies from Gazprom, after which Gazprom announced that it would stop gas supplies.
Nehammer reassures: “The precautions have been secured, our storage level is at 93 percent. This is an annual requirement for the whole of Austria. And we have sufficient capacity to get gas from other regions.”
“Austria is prepared”
The federal government has taken measures in the past that we are now resorting to. “All gas suppliers are legally obliged to create precautionary concepts so that we are as well prepared as possible for this day. You see, Austria is prepared and I reject any propaganda that claims the opposite,” Nehammer said.
Clear message to Putin
Moreover, he has already contacted President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. Nehammer’s clear message to Russia: “We also show that we will not let Putin blackmail us. Putin will not succeed in steering Austria and the EU off course.”
