Ertzainas wanted to pay tribute to Atutxa for his efforts in defending the institutions despite the threat from ETA. He is therefore the first person to receive this tribute without being an officer of the Basque police.
The former Security Council member of the Basque government between 1991 and 1998, Juan María Atutxa, received this Saturday a tribute from the Ertzainas association ‘Mila Esker’, held at the Memorial Center for Victims of Terrorism in Vitoria.
This group of Ertzainas wanted to pay tribute to Atutxa for his efforts in defending the institutions despite the threat from ETA. In this way, Atutxa has become the first person to receive this tribute, without being an officer of the Basque Police.
The former councilor is grateful and moved by the tribute, and commemorated the fifteen ertzainas killed by ETA.
He has also highlighted the work of his bodyguards, which he carried out for 26 years and 115 days, after ETA tried to kill him ten times, one of them with a bomb at the wedding of one of his sons.
In this sense, Atutxa has assured that as long as the nationalist left does not accept its mistakes, “we cannot give credibility to the updated poster.” “The sooner they assume that what they did was morally unacceptable, humanly intolerable and politically unfruitful, the closer we will be to the conditions for finally living in peace,” he concluded.
