Newly-elected US President Donald Trump wants to appoint Brendan Carr, a ‘fighter for free speech’, as chairman of the telecommunications regulator FCC. Considered a critic of internet giants, he claimed that Google, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft were “censoring” Americans. There are apparently also two new potential finance ministers in the running.
Trump shared the news on the Truth Social platform. Carr “fought against the legal regulations that have suppressed Americans’ freedoms and slowed our economy,” Trump’s statement said. He will put an end to the mass of regulations that paralyze innovators.
Carr’s reforms would have saved billions
Carr, a Republican, is a longtime commissioner of the FCC. In his role, he helped modernize infrastructure rules and accelerate the rollout of high-speed networks, according to the FCC website. His reforms would have reduced bureaucracy worth billions of dollars and expanded America’s global leadership position in the 5G mobile communications standard. According to a report in the New York Times, X boss and future government advisor Elon Musk is also said to have spoken out in favor of Carr’s appointment. Carr said on Platform X that he was honored to serve in the role.
The post is likely to be particularly important in the new government. The FCC also issues broadcast licenses for radio and television in the US, among other things. During the election campaign, Trump often threatened to take action against political opponents if he won the election, appointing special investigators against them, indicting them and even jailing them – including journalists. He regularly describes the media as ‘enemies of the people’ and wants to revoke the licenses of unwanted broadcasters.
Two new potential finance ministers in the race
Trump is also said to have put two other names on the list of possible candidates for Treasury Secretary. As the New York Times (NYT) and the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Sunday, former US Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh and billionaire Marc Rowan are now also being considered as possible candidates.
Warsh, 54, served on the Fed’s board of governors from 2006 to 2011 and is considered a monetary policy conservative. Rowan (62) is co-founder and CEO of investment company Apollo since 2021. According to the WSJ, Republican Senator Bill Hagerty (65) from Tennessee would also be in the race. Trump met him last week at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Until now, Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick and investor Scott Bessent were considered favorites for the position. However, Trump is said to have doubts about both candidates. Billionaire Elon Musk and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke out in favor of Lutnick on Saturday, making public the internal wrangling over the decision. An official nomination is still pending. Trump’s transition team initially made no comment.
