Before the third winter of the war, more Ukrainian refugees will come to Austria. There are 2,000 people per month, refugee coordinator Andreas Achrainer said on Tuesday. That is why the federal government, states and civil society must “come together again” to provide relief.
Achrainer reported on Tuesday that there are currently 76,000 Ukrainians in Austria. Less than half of them are still in primary care. Integration is important, but people who do not enter the labor market, such as retirees, people with disabilities and war wounded, are always forgotten.
“Opportunities for our labor market”
A secure basis for a right of residence is needed, according to top manager Cornelius Granig of Siemens and Raiffeisen. He is chairman of Ukraine Aid in Austria. According to him, many refugees have completed university studies. “This is a huge opportunity for our labor market and a potential that we have not yet fully exploited.”
Many Ukrainians have also trained in healthcare, where there is a serious shortage of personnel in this country. These need to be addressed and less emphasis placed on recruitment programs in countries like the Philippines.
ÖVP MP Andreas Minnich was happy that “solidarity between all parties” had emerged. This meant that €263 million could have flowed directly to Ukraine and its neighbors. Lisa Zuckerstätter of “Neighbor in Need” said that 100 million euros had been raised through donations. Ukraine is currently facing “the worst winter since the start of the war.” The focus of aid should be on children.
