Newly elected US President Donald Trump has nominated a former prosecutor as the future attorney general following the withdrawal of his favorite candidate Matt Gaetz. Pam Bondi (59) was, among other things, attorney general of Florida – and was part of Trump’s legal team in the first impeachment trial against him.
Trump originally targeted controversial Congressman Matt Gaetz for the post. However, he gave up a few hours earlier.
The Justice Department is of particular interest to Trump
Trump emphasized that Bondi was a prosecutor for about 20 years. In Gaetz’s case, one of the criticisms was that he did not have legal expertise or sufficient experience for the position. The Justice Department could play a key role in Trump’s second term – partly because of the ongoing criminal proceedings against the newly elected president.
Trump wants to refocus the ministry ‘on its true purpose’.
Trump also addressed this in a post on his online network Truth Socia: The U.S. Justice Department has been used against him and other Republicans for too long, he said. This is over now. Bondi will “refocus the Justice Department on its core purpose”: fighting crime and restoring security to the United States, Trump said. He described the lawyer as a fighter for an “America First” policy.
Bondi closed the investigation into Trump University
During her time as attorney general of the state of Florida, Bondi continued Trump’s policies through legal means, taking action against Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama’s health care reform and investigating unfounded allegations of election fraud by Democrats. In 2013, the Trump Foundation donated $25,000 to Bondi’s campaign for re-election as attorney general. Moments later, Bondi decided not to investigate further allegations against Trump University, an educational institution run by the billionaire suspected of fraud. Both parties denied any connection.
The 59-year-old also represented the then-president in the first impeachment trial against him in Congress in 2019. In recent months, she has made TV appearances criticizing the cases against Trump, portraying him as being pursued by investigating prosecutors for political motifs.
Gaetz, the preferred candidate, withdrew after accusations
Gaetz’s nomination was torpedoed by allegations that he had sex with a minor and used drugs. The 42-year-old has always rejected both. However, several Republican senators publicly doubted Gaetz would be confirmed by the House of Congress. Given the narrow Republican majority among the hundred senators, a ministerial appointment would fail with only four zero votes from their camp. Bondi may have a much better chance of passing the House of Congress.
