The date for this year’s federal presidential election has been set since Sunday: voters are called to the polls on October 9. Seated Alexander Van der Bellen stands for re-election.
From now on, in addition to Van der Bellen, former BZÖ politician Gerald Grosz and Dominik Wlazny alias Marco Pogo (Beer Party) also want to compete. However, both must first “cancel” the necessary 6000 statements of support. The FPÖ also wants to nominate a candidate.
Promote Former Politicians Van der Bellen
A number of former politicians of different walks of life already officially support the campaign for the re-election of Van der Bellen. Among others, ex-VP minister Maria Rauch-Kallat, ex-SPÖ minister of Justice Maria Berger and former NEOS member of the National Council Sepp Schellhorn recently announced that they would help gather the necessary statements of support and help with the election campaign. Funding details are expected to be announced in early July.

Nehammer: ‘I wish the candidates a good campaign’
“Every six years the Austrians elect their head of state, the Federal President. The federal government is responsible for planning and conducting the elections, which have now set an election date of 9 October,” Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) said in a written statement on Sunday. “I wish the candidates a good and fair election campaign and the very best.”
Kogler insists on fairness
Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) warned against fairness: “As Vice Chancellor I would like to call on the candidates to conduct a respectful and fair election campaign. And I want to call on the voters to exercise their right to vote. Because how many votes makes a difference to the strength of democracy and the republic.”
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), whose department is responsible for conducting the elections, said: “The Interior Ministry, as the federal electoral authority, and its experts have already started preparing for the elections.”
The announcement of the election of the Federal President by ordinance is a matter for the federal government. The election must be announced in agreement with the Main Committee of the National Council and the date must be published in the Federal Gazette. The reference date is usually the 61st day before election day. The election day must be a Sunday or a public holiday; any second round of voting must take place four weeks after the first round of voting.
