Protests in Georgia – Prime Minister wants to “root out liberal fascism”

Date:

The Georgian government is increasingly cracking down on opposition protests. Iraqi Prime Minister Kobachidze has now threatened to “wipe out liberal fascism”.

“We will do everything necessary to completely eradicate liberal fascism in Georgia,” he told reporters on Thursday. This process has already begun. Kobachidze adopted a formulation often used by Russia. He also called on parents to protect their children against ‘liberal-fascist’ influences. Kobachidze once again accused the protest movement of seeking a revolution and being financed from abroad.

Complaints about serious injuries to the detainees
The day before, police carried out several raids on the offices of opposition parties and arrested around 300 people, including leading opposition politicians. There were then reports of injuries among those arrested. They claimed to the media that they had been mistreated during their interviews.

The Georgian Human Rights Commissioner noted: “Most of them have serious injuries to their faces, eyes and heads, which virtually prevents the police from using necessary and appropriate force against them on every occasion. Intentional and serious use of force for the purpose of punishment is an act of torture.”

Since parliamentary elections at the end of October, which were overshadowed by allegations of fraud, people in the former Soviet republic of Georgia have taken their anger to the streets. After Prime Minister Kobachidze announced that there would be no EU accession negotiations until 2028, marking a 180-degree turn in foreign policy, the protests reached a new level of escalation.
