MPs from South Korea’s ruling party do not want to participate in the impeachment proceedings against conservative President Yoon Suk-yeol. Party lawmaker Cho Kyoung-tae said this on Saturday.
The social liberal opposition is relying on the support of at least eight MPs from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to gain the necessary two-thirds majority for the impeachment trial.
The president has declared martial law
Before the vote, ruling party MPs left the plenary hall. Only one remained in place.
The opposition Democratic Party (DP) launched impeachment proceedings in parliament on Wednesday after the president declared martial law.
He justified his actions by accusing the opposition of being accomplices of communist North Korea and having hijacked the parliamentary process to plunge the country into crisis. After massive protests from his party, he lifted martial law after six hours.
