The presidential elections in Romania should be repeated in full. The Constitutional Court in Bucharest ruled on Friday that she was not free. Secret services had previously spoken about Russian interference.
The decision came just two days before the second round of voting, which would pit pro-Russian right-wing extremist Calin Georgescu against pro-European centrist candidate Elena Lasconi. Favorite Social Democratic head of government Marcel Ciolacu came third. He had announced that he did not want to request a recount.
However, the Constitutional Court has now decided that the presidential elections must be repeated in full. Georgescu-Romania has been targeted by Romanian investigators after intelligence agencies suggested he owed his electoral success to a Russian-controlled campaign. His propaganda was massively promoted, especially on TikTok and Telegram.
A few days ago, the Supreme Defense Council announced that the Kremlin had repeatedly tried to influence public opinion in Romania. However, the rulings of the Romanian Constitutional Court are also controversial because, from the perspective of the bourgeois parties, it is close to the ruling Social Democrats. In the run-up to the elections, it banned a right-wing extremist EU representative from standing as a candidate.
Lasconi: “Democracy trampled”
Criticism of the court decision came from Lasconi. Democracy is being trampled, she said. The second election should have taken place as planned.
The election will likely not be repeated until the new year. It is still unclear who will be head of state by then. The term of outgoing President Klaus Johannis ends on December 21.
