Due to rising child crime, Sweden is now considering an Australian-style age limit for social media. This is intended to prevent gangs from hiring children and young people for murders or bombings, Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer said after a meeting with his Scandinavian counterparts.
According to the Swedish police, gangs have been increasingly using Instagram, TikTok & Co for several years. to recruit teenagers for attacks in Scandinavia. Some of them are only eleven years old.
Murder suspects are getting younger
Between January and July this year alone, the number of murder suspects under the age of 15 in Sweden was 93, three times as many as in the same period last year. The country now has the most fatal shootings per capita in Europe. In recent months, Danish police have registered 32 cases of Swedes being hired to commit violent crimes in Denmark.
According to Minister of Justice Strömmer, several companies such as Facebook parent Meta, Alphabet subsidiary Google and Snapchat operator Snap have announced that they will “do everything in their power” to get the problem under control: “The situation is very serious . We don’t rule anything out.”
If the results are not satisfactory, the legislature will intervene. To this end, it is being investigated which restrictions in other countries would be suitable for Sweden. The affected companies were initially not available for comment.
