Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is stepping down as chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the EU Parliament. She announced this in Rome on Sunday. The politician has held the post since 2020 and now wants to support former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
“I agreed when I was asked to extend the end of my mandate until the EU parliamentary elections in June. Now that the elections have taken place, I think I have done my duty. I would therefore like to announce that I am stepping down as chairman of the European Conservatives (..),” said Meloni. The EU parliamentary group deserves “to have a president who can look after them full-time.”
The Prime Minister was elected President of the ECR in September 2020 and was the first Italian to lead a European party family in the EU Parliament. As of October 2022, the 47-year-old has become the first woman to lead a government in Italy.
Morawiecki is the preferred successor
Her Fratelli d’Italia party will now support former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s candidacy for the post, Meloni said on Sunday. He attended the event in Rome.
With 78 members, the EKR is the fourth largest of the eight parliamentary groups in the EU Parliament. For example, the Polish Law and Justice (PiS), the Swedish Democrats (SD) and the Fratelli d’Italia are represented.
