Tough negotiations – Babler: “We hope something goes through”

Date:

The coalition negotiations before Christmas are dragging on. Late on Friday afternoon it was heard from various quarters that the talks were “difficult”. “We hope that something will finally move forward,” said SPÖ leader Andreas Babler. There are “some political questions that still need to be clarified,” says NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger.

ÖVP boss Karl Nehammer expects “intensive negotiations”. The coalition negotiations have been going on for more than four weeks. This Friday, the politicians did not end the talks. According to NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger, there must be progress in the budget with structural reforms in the next two years.

She didn’t want to think about the negotiations failing. “We negotiate to get ahead, not to get out.” It was only on Thursday that speculation arose that her party would withdraw from the talks.

Speculation arose on Friday that the SPÖ could collapse the negotiations if there was no further movement on wealth taxes. The third president of the National Council, Doris Bures (SPÖ), recently campaigned for wealth taxes such as inheritance taxes. Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) of Burgenland is already toying with new elections.

“I would like to see a common will from everyone to solve the debt crisis. “That would be a Christmas present for Austria,” Cardinal Christoph Schönborn called on Friday. The national deficit is ‘alarming’.
