“Absolutely necessary” – Trump wants to take over the largest island in the world

Date:

Newly elected US President Donald Trump wants to annex Greenland to the US. “In the interests of national security and freedom around the world, the United States believes that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump wrote on the online platform Truth Social, which he co-founded.

In the post, Trump also named his nominee for U.S. ambassador to Denmark: Ken Howery, co-founder of the payment service provider Paypal, who served as ambassador to Sweden during Trump’s first term. The appointment requires the approval of the US Senate.

Trump wanted to buy Greenland before
Trump had already proposed buying Greenland during his first term. The answer from Denmark at the time was clear: No, thank you.

Greenland’s foreign representative Vivian Motzfeldt dismissed Trump’s new initiative on Danish broadcaster TV2 as “nonsensical”. Prime Minister Múte B. Egede emphasized that Greenland is not for sale. But you have to be open to economic cooperation. “Because all cooperation and all trade cannot go through Denmark,” it said in a statement to TV2.

Greenlanders “Open for Business”
Two Greenlandic MPs in the Danish parliament were more open-minded. They are “open for business,” said Aaja Chemnitz. Her party, Inuit Ataqatigiit, would like to see greater U.S. involvement in Greenland, especially in the areas of education and economic development.

Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam from the Siumut party said she was open to dialogue. Trump shows understanding for the strategic and global importance of Greenland, she told broadcaster DR. “But it is important to emphasize that Greenland is not a commodity or a geostrategic trophy.”

Interesting because of suspected mineral resources
The enormous Greenland with about 56,000 inhabitants is largely autonomous. Due to its location in the Arctic, its proximity to Russia, suspected mineral resources there and an important US military base, the island is not only of strategic importance to the US. In terms of area, Greenland is about six times larger than Germany.

Also interested in the Panama Canal
At an event in Arizona on Sunday, Trump also threatened to regain control of the Panama Canal. The canal connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean and is one of the most important trade routes in the world.

The US undertook construction of the large-scale project in the early 20th century and subsequently controlled the area for decades. Control was then gradually transferred to Panama.
