A study among military conscripts commissioned by the Ministry of Defense yielded astonishing results. Accordingly, the army youth considers the land and nature as the most important feature of Austria. Neutrality follows close behind! It is striking that people with a migrant background also have the same opinion.
Neutrality is often described in political debate as outdated and outdated. The research available to “Krone” paints a completely different picture. In the total group, a clear majority of 56 percent consider it characteristic of Austria. For soldiers whose parents were both born in Austria, this is even 58 percent. But the values are also comparably high among young Austrians with a migration background.
Christianity is increasingly falling behind as a value
It is also interesting that sporting achievements (35.4) are rated higher than cultural (27) and economic achievements (28.4). The value of “Christianity and Christian heritage” is also significant. Only 18.2 percent called this a characteristic of Austria.
Opinion of 5000 young men and women
The study, in collaboration with the Integration Fund, interviewed 5,520 people. The questions focus on the sense of culture and identity of soldiers in voluntary military service (approximately 50 of the 5,520 people). 95.3 percent of respondents were born in Austria. In 75 percent (3875), both parents were born in Austria, in 568 (eleven percent) of the participants at least one parent was from Austria and in 719 (14 percent) both parents were from abroad.
“Austria has incredible strengths and beauties. Our young soldiers appreciate this. We must always keep our values in mind,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.
When asked what it means to be Austrian, 65 percent of military service members say the German language and the Austrian way of life, values and customs. About 60 percent say that being Austrian means you were born here and are a citizen.
When asked about the characteristics of Austrians, respondents answered sociable (45 percent), familiar (41 percent) and friendly (36).
