In the current political duel, the usual heated discussion took place between Eva Glawischnig and Andreas Mölzer when reviewing the big exciting topics of the year: for example, the annual balance sheet of the two Greens, Lena Schilling and Leonore Gewessler. Or if we look at the two SPÖ politicians Andreas Babler and Georg Dornauer. Also about the question of how honestly and objectively Alexander Van der Bellen is guiding the current government negotiations. And whether the FPÖ election slogan ‘Your will be done’ was fair and correct.
In the beginning there was a discussion about the current performance of the Greens, about which Eva Glawischnig gave very open insights: “What I think you have to say quite painlessly: the last elections in Austria were devastating for the Greens. Kicked out of state governments. Resigned from the federal government. Halved in Styria. So these are clear signals from the population, yes.”
When asked whether the FPÖ is happy with the current weak performance of the Greens, Andreas Mölzer answers: “Yes, I think they are happy with it. It was interesting that trench warfare broke out in the left wing of the Greens. The fact that Mrs. Schilling was in the Standard made me laugh in a Homeric way. And now she has disappeared into the Brussels swamp.”
Glawischnig, added: “The appearance is not nice. You have a young woman who says something about such love affairs. Normally this isn’t a problem for a twenty year old. But if you become the top candidate, that is Werner Kogler’s responsibility. Werner Kogler was certainly responsible for all these decisions. He is responsible for the top candidate for the European elections. And also the question of his successor, what happens next. He is already the central figure in the fate of the Greens.”
Green intermezzo over?
Mölzer surprises: “Well, that doesn’t sound very positive.” Glawischnig admits: “It’s critical. Yes, of course he made mistakes. To hold Lena Schilling for so long.” Mölzer, arguing with Schilling: “When you brag about the love affairs you have and so on. This is all humanly understandable, but somehow politically obnoxious. And it came across as stupid.” Glawischnig, and further added: “Yes, and it’s also a bit unsympathetic. And it really marked the start of the departure and, so to speak, this difficult phase for the Greens.” Now the Greens have fallen out of many positions and have little room to maneuver. Mölzer: “You could say that the green intermezzo is over in Austria.”
Everything went wrong with Babler
But the SPÖ also had two polarizing personalities, Andreas Babler and Georg Dornauer, who would have helped shape 2024. Glawischnig: “Babler tried very hard, sweating during his speeches and trying to introduce his program. And then come from the side (meaning Georg Dornauer, note) such cross shots as a hunting shot. And then also the contacts with billionaires. This does not suit social democracy at all. So everything that could go wrong, went wrong for Babler.” Mölzer smiling: “Mr. Dornauer, that is the womanizer from the Zillertal. I’m not sure if that’s so unpopular in Tyrol.”
