After the sugar break – Van der Bellen made it clear: ‘I expect results’

Date:

With rarely clear words, the Federal President announced his support for a three-party coalition consisting of ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS after government negotiations failed. He now expects results “together with all Austrians”, according to Alexander Van Bellen.

At the start of his speech, the Federal President once again charted the bizarre domestic political events of recent months, starting with the National Council elections on September 29 and the turbulent weeks that followed, during which no one had been given the task of building a coalition. to form. government for a long time: “Because a completely new situation arose that no one was willing to cooperate with the FPÖ under the leadership of Herbert Kickl.”

Karl Nehammer, Andreas Babler and Beate Meinl-Reisinger started coalition negotiations after in-depth discussions: “These discussions took place until last night. Today the NEOS announced their departure. That was surprising. In summary: this three-way variant is history.”

Yet there is a need for a “majority that represents you as citizens,” Van der Bellen emphasized. It is therefore important to continue working on forming a government. “Karl Nehammer and Andreas Babler told me today in personal conversations that they will continue to work on a coalition,” the Federal President said.

This must be done now without delay. “I made that very clear today. I want clarity. Fast and comprehensive clarity. Together with all Austrians, I now expect these results,” the head of state explained in an unusually sharp manner.
