Nearly three years after the start of the war in Ukraine, approval for President Volodymyr Zelensky has dropped significantly. According to a survey, about every second person in Ukraine trusts its president. In March 2022, this was still nine in ten respondents.
Since the war began in February 2022, approval ratings have fallen continuously. At the end of 2023, 77 percent of Ukrainians surveyed still trusted their president. At the end of June 2024, fewer than six in ten respondents said this.
In the latest telephone survey by the Kyiv Institute of Sociology (KIIS), 52 percent said they trusted Volodymyr Zelensky. However, 39 percent distrust him. In March 2002 this was only seven percent. This share has therefore increased significantly.
Fights as an influencing factor?
According to KIIS, support is greater in the west and center of the country than in the east and south of Ukraine, where fighting is heaviest and where the army has recently had to cede more and more land to advancing Russian forces. With the impending change of president in the US, further support for what has been our most important ally is also in doubt.
Zelenskyj took office in 2019. His term effectively ended last month. However, due to the current state of martial law, he remains president. Ukrainian authorities said there is no choice for now. A fifth of the country is currently under Russian control.
