The First Deputy Lehendakari and Minister of Culture and Language Policy of the Basque Government, Ibone Bengoetxeahas described as “good news” the agreement between the governments of Spain and the Canary Islands on the distribution of unaccompanied migrant children, lacking knowledge of the legal formula. In this sense, the Basque government will defend a “just” distribution, based on “objective indicators” and an economic contribution to Euskadi for hosting this group.

In an interview in Euskadi Irratia, Bengoetxea pointed out that the agreement between the Canary Islands and the State for the distribution of minor migrants between the autonomous communities “responds to what was requested.”

In any case, Bengoetxea has clarified that this distribution must take place based on certain criteria: “On the one hand, it must be a fair distribution, based on objective indicators, and on the other hand, Euskadi, who has welcomed so far, will should receive an economic contribution”.

“Euskadi has always been supportive and will continue to be so,” Bengoetxea stressed, although he said that “does not mean that we will not assert our powers and demands.”

When asked about the controversy over the appointment of the former Minister of Health (2020-2024), Gotzone SagarduiAs the new medical director of Vithas Vitoria Hospital, Bengoetxea has assured that she is “compatible” and that “the procedure has been completed.”

Finally, reference is made to the final verdict against BasqueBengoetxea has denounced that the courts are “treating Basque as if it has the same strength as Spanish”, while Basque is “a minority language in need of positive discrimination”. The Supreme Court of the Basque Country (TSJPV) has upheld the OPE’s repetition of 77 jobs in the administration of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia due to Basque language requirements, and dismissed the appeal of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.
