The movement Basque Country Lagunkoiawhich aims encourage citizen participation for the improvement of Basque neighborhoods, cities and municipalities, is celebrating its first ten years of life with the aim of municipalities “increasingly” more inclusive, more accessible and friendlier
In the act of commemoration, the Lehendakari, Inigo Urkullustated that this movement “promotes the involvement of the rest of the citizenry in a common effort to ensure that” municipalities are friendlier spaces
De Lehendakari stressed that “prolonging an active and autonomous life depends to a large extent on the design, safety and suitability of urban spaces and residential environments”, in areas such as transport, housing, social and health services, buildings or outdoor spaces. In this sense, he stated that older people are “change agents, responsible and protagonists of the initiative Euskadi Lagunakoia”.
Urkullu participated this Wednesday, together with the Minister of Equality, Justice and Social Policy, Beatriz Artolazabalat the memorial ceremony. At the meeting, Artolazabal expressed his gratitude and congratulations to those who “have been involved in the vital task of making the municipalities of Euskadi more accessible and friendlywhile emphasizing the pride involved in “having a” social fabric of such power.

Thus, the Minister has ensured that the main objectives have been achieved: “Promoting citizen participation and the public, private and social sectors to develop a kindness movement in the Basque Country; encourage active citizenship of older people from their participation in decision-making and the improvement of the environment and taking advantage of the potential they represent, as generators of well-being, in the life of the towns and villages of Euskadi”.
The Euskadi Lagunkoia network currently includes: 70 municipalities from all over Euskadi; 25 in Gipuzkoa, 27 in Bizkaia and 18 in Araba. The kindness movement started in the CAE in 2009, with the inclusion of San Sebastian in the WHO World Network. Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Durango joined the initiative shortly afterwards.
Artolazabal has expressed his wish to “give new impetus” to “a present and a future in which the municipalities, and their different corners, are increasingly inclusive, accessible and friendly places for each of the people who inhabit them”.
So has the Lehendakari who has “invited public and private institutions, professionals, universities and scientific entities, organizations representing the elderly, volunteers, service providers and the media to join the kindness movement”.
The celebration will conclude with a traveling exhibition that will be inaugurated on July 11 in San Sebastián to later visit other Basque municipalities.
