By the end of next year, the Institute of Remembrance, Coexistence and Human Rights, Gogora, will have a museum of remembrance at its headquarters in Bilbao, which will be built in the courtyard of the building.
The project for this museum was presented this Wednesday by the State Secretary for Human Rights and Memory, Jose Antonio Rodriguez Ranzoat the meeting of the board of directors of Gogora, which was chaired by the lehendakari, Inigo Urkullu
The State Secretary explained that the implementation project will be completed, which will be put out to tender and awarded in the fourth quarter of this year. The works will start at the beginning of 2023 and have an expected completion time of seven months.
The museum, called gogoraguneawill propose an adaptation of the experience of walking through a forest, as a place of memory, combining information and interaction to generate in the visitor feelings and an emotional connection with its history and with the victims as the central element of the space.
The project distinguishes the historical periods, the causes of victimization and explicitly excludes the justification or comparison of some facts with others, Gogora reported.
The space, designed by architect Federico Soriano and with an area of 540 square meterswill be divided into seven zones“The Civil War and the Francoist Regime; ETA Terrorism; Repression, Illegal Police Violence and Torture; The GAL and the Terrorism of the Far Right; The Social and Institutional Response; Resilience and Reflection; and Recent Memory Spaces”.
The rooms on ETA terrorism, police brutality and the GAL will show interactive information, with timelines, data and audio and video projections; testimonials from victims; commemoration of the dead; and a section for more information and questions.
Columbarium of Orduña
On the other hand, the director of Gogora, Aintzane Ezenarro, announced at the meeting that the Orduña Columbarium (Bizkaia) will be inaugurated in July next year and will house 14 remains of the prison camp that existed in the area during the civil war and which was excavated of the Orduña cemetery itself in 2014.
This columbarium, the second in Gogora after that in Elgoibar (Gipuzkoa), has the capacity to house a total of 60 remains and will house the remains recovered in future excavations that cannot be identified or which the families decide to bury in the columbarium.
