After the resignation of Justin Trudeau, Canada is looking for a new prime minister. So far, two people have put themselves forward as candidates, including former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland.
The second candidate is the former head of the British and Canadian central banks Mark Carney. “I’m doing this because Canada is the best country in the world,” the 59-year-old said in front of his supporters. “But it can be even better.” Freeland, 56, announced her candidacy on Platform X. “I am running to fight for Canada.”
She previously served as Minister of Trade, Foreign Affairs and Finance and as Deputy Prime Minister under Trudeau. However, in December she announced her resignation after disagreements with him. Carney served as Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. He was previously head of the Bank of Canada. “I’m not the usual suspect when it comes to politics, but this is not the time for usual politics,” he said in Edmonton.
Conservatives lead in polls
The Conservatives are currently at the top of the polls in Canada. The chairman is Pierre Poilievre. The Liberals will decide on the new leadership of their party on March 9. The winner could then take over the post of Prime Minister for a few weeks. However, it is only a matter of a few weeks before Parliament reconvenes on March 24. The opposition could force early elections.
