Croatian Deputy Prime Minister Josip Dabro has resigned. Local media had previously published a video of him firing a gun from a moving car…

Dabro of the co-ruling right-wing extremist Homeland Movement announced his resignation “for moral reasons” via Facebook late on Friday evening, Croatian media reported on Saturday.

The video, which the daily ‘Jutarnji List’ published on its website on Friday, shows Dabro firing several shots from the passenger seat of a moving car. The minister emphasized that the incident took place several years ago and apologized for his behavior on Friday. “I deeply regret this irresponsible and reckless act,” he wrote in a statement.

Result of a “carefree moment”
Dabro said he only fired empty cartridges and at no time did he endanger the safety or property of others. He also clarified that the gun he used was legal and registered. “I apologize to the public for this act, which does not reflect my values but was the result of a careless moment,” he added, according to Hina news agency.

Later, Dabro stressed in his resignation announcement on Facebook that his personal circumstances should not distract from the government’s key priorities or hinder necessary reforms. “Therefore, I am resigning in the full belief that this is the best decision for the public interest,” he wrote.

Prime Minister Plenković called for withdrawal
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković on Saturday called Dabro’s withdrawal the right and only possible decision. “Against the backdrop of the increasing violence we have recently witnessed in Croatia, such behavior is completely incompatible with the role of a minister in my government,” he said, according to Hina. Plenković himself asked the minister to resign.
