“Maximum disruption” – German ambassador to the US warns about Trump

Date:

According to a document, the German ambassador to the US fears fundamental changes in the country’s political order due to future US President Donald Trump and his government. Trump is pursuing an agenda of ‘maximum disruption’, the newspaper says.

Trump’s agenda means “maximum concentration of power in the president at the expense of Congress and the states,” according to a confidential analysis for the German federal government that is available to the Reuters news agency. The paper is signed by Ambassador Andreas Michaelis and dated January 14.

Trump is pursuing an agenda of ‘maximum disruption’, analysis says. Fundamental democratic principles and the system of checks and balances would be largely undermined. The legislature, law enforcement and the media would be deprived of their independence and politically abused.

Large technology companies (Big Tech) were given ‘co-governance’. Trump and his adviser Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of the short-messaging platform X, have already taken action against critics and unpopular media companies.

The Supreme Court could prevent the worst
In his analysis, Ambassador Michaelis assigns the American judiciary, and especially the Supreme Court, a central role in the domestic political conflicts expected as a result of Trump. Although the Supreme Court recently expanded presidential power, even the strongest critics expected this would prevent the worst.

Law enforcement is becoming a political tool, the newspaper says. Central to Trump’s goals of mass deportations, retaliation and ensuring his legal immunity is control of the Justice Department and the FBI.

In conflicts with states that traditionally have major powers in the US, Trump has extensive options, for example through emergency regulations. Domestic military deployment for police tasks is also possible.

No comment from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Asked about the document, the German Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that it generally does not comment on internal papers, analyzes or embassy reports. The US is one of Germany’s most important allies. The American people voted for Trump in a democratic election.

“Of course, we will also work closely with the new US administration in the interests of Germany and Europe,” the statement said. “As the U.S. federal government, we maintain a close network of relationships across society, in the states and in the U.S. Congress across party lines.” Trump’s staff initially made no comment.

Republican Trump will take over the position of the most powerful politician in the world from Democrat Joe Biden on Monday. The German federal government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz has largely refrained from direct public criticism since Trump’s election.
