With second place in the state elections in Burgenland, the FPÖ will most likely also win a seat in the Federal Council from the ÖVP. Despite slight losses, the SPÖ retained two of the three seats on the Federal Council in Burgenland.
According to the distribution of seats in the state parliament, the number two in the elections will receive a place in the Federal Council, says Werner Zögernitz, chairman of the Institute for Parliamentarism and Democracy Issues and former director of the parliamentary club ÖVP.
ÖVP has the relative majority in the Bundesrat
With 23 mandates in the future, the ÖVP will maintain its relative majority in the Federal Council. The SPÖ is at 18, the FPÖ is now at 14. The Greens have four seats and the NEOS have one. If a blue-black coalition were to emerge at the federal level, it would also have a simple majority of 37 seats in the Federal Council.
60 members
The Federal Council has 60 members. The state with the most Austrian citizens – currently Lower Austria – has twelve seats, Vienna and Upper Austria ten each, Styria nine, Tyrol five, Carinthia and Salzburg four each and Burgenland and Vorarlberg three seats each.
