Little effort – EU animal welfare alliance – but without Austria!

Date:

After bold promises from Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) in the “Krone” interview on animal welfare at EU level, there is now a lack of action.

The Greens have had to protest a lot about the lack of commitment to the amendment of the Animal Welfare Act in Austria. The criticism doesn’t stop! In concrete terms, this concerns the fact that the German federal minister Cem Özdemir took a courageous initiative for the European Commission to protect animals during transport.

Austria is absent
In close collaboration with his colleagues from Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden, he has drawn up a position paper on this subject. Now the question arises, why is Austria not included here? Minister Rauch spoke in June about a European alliance he formed with Özdemir that would lead to a revolution in animal protection.

Is it all just smoke and mirrors? “It is a pity that Austria is lagging behind again,” said Vienna’s animal welfare ombudsman, Eva Persy.
