The Iranian ambassador in Vienna was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on Monday because of his position in Hezbollah. Abbas Bagherpour Ardekani was asked to refrain from such actions. Hezbollah and its symbols are banned in Austria.
As reported, the diplomat published a report on Sunday about the Lebanese Hezbollah airstrikes on Israel, with the militia’s flag visible. Underneath he had written: “Hezbollah will triumph.” The post has since been deleted.
“We strongly condemn the use of the Hezbollah flag in a tweet by the Iranian ambassador,” the ministry said in a statement on Monday. Even a diplomat must abide by the laws of the host country.

For Ardekani, the action could have legal consequences. The Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN) has already filed a complaint against him. Since Hezbollah and its symbols are banned in Austria, an offense can be punished with a fine of up to 10,000 euros or a prison sentence of up to one month.
However, the ambassador’s diplomatic immunity must be taken into account. The Greens and the SPÖ reacted angrily to the report on Sunday and called on the Foreign Ministry to summon the ambassador.
