The Central Council of Muslims in Germany has “strongly condemned” the suspected Islamist knife attack in Solingen, which left three people dead. Hatred and agitation have no place in Germany.
“This cowardly attack is a hostile and inhumane act against our free society,” said a statement from the Central Council released Monday. “That is why we must do everything we can to protect the value base of our free, open and diverse society.”
There must be no understanding for acts like those in Solingen: “Hatred, agitation, extremism and radicalism of any kind must have no place in Germany,” the Central Council declared. In Solingen, a 26-year-old Syrian was arrested as a suspect.
The political debate is flaring up
While opposition parties Union and AfD called for corrections to asylum policy, the traffic light government of Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals rejected calls by CDU leader Friedrich Merz to stop fully accepting Afghans and Syrians. Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit referred to the individual right to asylum in the Basic Law.
A week before state elections in the eastern German states of Saxony and Thuringia, the attack by the 26-year-old Syrian sparked a debate about asylum policy and security laws in Germany. The man, who claimed support for the Islamic State (IS) after his arrest, killed three people with a knife and injured eight during the city festival in Solingen.
