Monday is not just about the inauguration of the new American president. The departure of incumbent Joe Biden from the White House also plays an important role in the handover ceremony. The outgoing head of state received his successor Donald Trump for tea at the White House a few hours before his swearing-in (see livestream above). In between, Joe and Jill Biden found time for a last selfie from the garden of the presidential residence.
“We love you, America,” Joe Biden wrote on Platform the American people.”
Donald and Melania Trump, the future first couple, greeted the Bidens with the words: “Welcome home.” The tradition of meeting at the White House on the day of the transfer of power has historical roots. It serves to put political differences aside for a while.
Emphasis should also be placed on a smooth transition between two governments. Before Trump’s first term, he and his wife Melania were hosted by Barack and Michelle Obama at government headquarters.
Trump did not receive Biden four years ago
The change of power in 2021 was different: Trump did not recognize Biden’s election victory and stayed away from the inauguration of his successor. An official meeting between the two, as usual, did not take place.
