Panama and Migration – First Mission of the US Minister of Foreign Affairs Marco Rubio

Date:

The first foreign journey of the new American Foreign Minister is dominated by the rigid migration policy of Donald Trump and his plans for the Panama Canal. Because Marco Rubio visits various Central American countries.

A spokeswoman confirmed the journey, but did not mention the individual countries. In addition to migration, it will be about supply chains and economic growth. American media reported that stops are planned from the end of next week in Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, mentioned the reduction of migration as a priority for his ministry after being sworn in. The former Senator from Florida and Trump have already spoken on the phone with colleagues in Costa Rica and El Salvador, and in the discussions the ‘crisis of mass migration’ was also discussed, as stated in one of the messages.

In Panama, the resentment about Trump’s claims on the important Waterweg will probably dominate the discussions. In the past two weeks, the new president has said several times downright that control over the channel should be at the United States. In a television interview that was recorded on Wednesday, he said again, “We will have to get him back.”

Panama turns to the United Nations
Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino rejected Trump’s threats and claims. Negotiations cannot be taken about the sovereignty and independence of Panama, he said. In a letter to the United Nations, UN Secretary General António Guterres is called upon to submit the “worrying threat” to the Security Council.
