More than 1.3 million lower Austrians can fulfill their civil duty on Sunday and determine the composition of the local council of their hometown. You will of course accompany the “Kroon” through the election day. And follow the questions in advance: why a comparison with the last election is – and when the mayor is actually chosen.
In terms of the general result, the ÖVP has the absolute majority in the communities of the lower Austria. This is of course not the case everywhere – so in local elections it is difficult to mention something of a general result. In fact, 568 individual elections take place. Comparison with the result of 2020 is difficult for various reasons.
Not all communities vote on Sunday
First, in addition to the St. Pölten, Krems and Waidhofen on the YBBS, the municipalities of Vösendorf and Perner’s Village do not choose, because it was only coordinated here in 2024 and therefore within the transitional period for a new composition of the local parliament.
Secondly, the second residential seats are used with the reform of voting rights – so “only” 1,314,645 Lower Austrians still have rights to vote. That is a minus of almost 11 percent. The comparison will also be powerful in the mandates. As reported, the number of assignments in the municipal councils is considerably increasing to 11,873. The reason for this is the general population plus.
So what do the parties expect? The People’s Party does not compete for the first time in all municipalities, but will be happy to claim the “Bijter” Zillingdorf in the Wiener Neustadt -District – where black municipal councils start with a civil list – but after the election. It is undisputed that you are losing communities this year. “We have a few places in every choice that the majorities are about,” a party spokesperson told the “Krone”.
Can the FPö make the next election success?
Conversely, this means that the “mayor party” – as the ÖVP likes to call itself – will also get a few communities. By the way, the Spö, which will start in 538 municipalities this year, will change. The FPö wants to score in 444 municipalities – and has a serious opportunity for the first time, including one or the other executive chairman in the country.
So will freedom be able to celebrate the first blue mayor? This is unlikely – because to say that you should get an absolute majority with certainty. As you know, only the municipal councils are chosen, which in turn choose the city and local leaders.
But the mandatars still have enough time. Provided that there are no objections to the end result, the component meetings take place on 11 February, but at the last minute on 11 March. And in a handful of communities between Enns and Leitha, it is clear before the election that there will be a repeat.
