Proximity to the Nazis – Criticism of Rosenkranz for commemorating the Holocaust

Date:

The fact that Walter Rosenkranz (FPÖ), chairman of the National Council, is participating in a parliamentary meeting on Holocaust Remembrance Day is causing dissatisfaction. The Jewish-Austrian Students (JöH) and the Memorial Service Association have called on the SPÖ, Greens and NEOS not to participate in the discussion.

The MPs should instead attend the ceremony at Heldenplatz. Rosenkranz was “right-wing extremist” and paid tribute to “convicted Nazi criminals,” said Alon Ishay, president of the Jewish-Austrian Students. There cannot be a commemoration of the Holocaust with rosaries. “We will not be a fig leaf for the FPÖ.”

The Memorial Service Association also criticized the commemoration “side by side with Walter Rosenkranz”. “As now, the FPÖ maintains a revisionist memory culture and a problematic approach to the National Socialist past,” the broadcast said.

Don’t express yourself
Monday marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The President of the National Council has invited people to an event in Parliament. The plan is for students to talk to contemporary witness Erika Freeman. The politician will not speak himself.

Rosenkranz was already prevented by the JöH from laying a wreath on Judenplatz for the victims of the November pogroms. The Israelite Community (IKG) had previously explicitly not invited him to the event at the Shoah name wall.
